Suggested Process

Dormancy:

Before a strawberry seed begins to germinate, it must experience at least two weeks of freezing temperatures. Then the seed requires temperatures between 04 and 15 degrees Celsius to break dormancy and begin development. Home gardeners can simulate a dormancy period by mixing strawberry seeds with an equal volume of moist sand or peat and storing the mixture in a refrigerator. The length of time required to break dormancy varies by strawberry species.

 

Imbibition:

As temperatures rise and a strawberry seed “wakes” from its dormancy phase, the water absorption, or imbibition, phase begins. The seed coat swells and softens. During this phase, the soil must remain moist. If the seed does not stay moist continuously, it will not develop further.

 

Radicle Emergence:

Once the seed has absorbed water, its development stops for a short time while the seed starts to make proteins and metabolize its food stores. Then the cells start to elongate and divide, and the radicle, or the embryonic root, emerges from the seed. This root anchors the plant into the soil and begins absorbing water from the soil.

 

Shoot Emergence:

After the root emerges, shoot emergence is the next phase in the strawberry seed’s germination. The shoot contains the cotyledons, or the first two leaves. The section of the shoot below the leaves lengthens and, forming a hook, pulls the leaves and the growing tip out of the soil. The strawberry plant must receive light and remain moist in this growing phase.
